The FWA (Favourite Website Awards) has published a thorough list of sites it honors, with A Girl Story (Site of the Day, July 29, 2010) listed as a winning example in the following category:

Small, yet simple, ideas with big impact (viral)

Click here to view the full list of Work We Award

LITTLE RED ROBOT helmed the site’s donation-based animated series, and is represented for directing assignments by Beef Films.
In November of 2009, Seth Shukovsky, Creative Director at LITTLE RED ROBOT, was approached with a very special request: Scott Goodson, CCO of New York ad agency STRAWBERRYFROG, was doing a project on behalf of the Mahindra Foundation, and wanted to know if LRR would be interested in collaborating. Shukovsky didn’t waste one second contemplating his response.

“When the founder and ECD of a global agency calls you, and asks you if you want to co-creative direct one of his campaigns…you say yes, and do it!” Shukovsky recalls.

“I’ve always had a great admiration for the fresh inspired work done by STRAWBERRYFROG,” he adds. “It’s great to have another solid offering in their rich legacy of highly visual and culturally moving work.”

The project resulting from their collaboration is a donation-based, animated film series called “A Girl Story,” told through the eyes of Tarla, a young girl who simply wants to go to school and receive an education. Tarla’s story progresses as viewers provide donations, unlocking a new chapter each time a certain amount of donations are met. The funds are sent directly to the Nanhi Kali program, which provides education to underprivileged girls in India.

“The first part of the project was writing, and concepting, concepting, concepting,” Shukovsky says. Art direction was also of great importance, he says, “knowing we wanted to use animation, fleshing out the visual journey while creating the story and concept.” Eve Weinberg, Art Director at LRR, was instrumental in this process. “It’s Eve’s singular talent that really pushed this campaign to look so amazing,” Shukovsky says of Weinberg, who helped flesh out the story and oversaw details of the production, including hand illustrating every asset used in the campaign.

“We decided to go with this emotional, color rich illustration and 2D animation technique,” Shukovsky explains. “We felt it captured the spirit of the story and allowed us a simple but effective mechanism to deliver it. We had teams of 2D animators working on this, and without them, (music and sound company) Barking Owl, and our programmers, none of this would have been possible. I think this is another great example of how LITTLE RED ROBOT is truly a collaborator to our agency partners. We come up with innovative ideas and see them through to completion.”

A Girl Story was a project that needed to be both artistic and moving, a challenge LLR was more than ready to face.

“LRR provided excellent and extremely talented options that made the process painless,” says STRAWBERRYFROG’s Goodson. “We only work with the best, and we prefer those that are challenging the status quo, as well as standing for creative excellence. Seth and his team at LLR represent this fully. They have an incredible collection of cinematic illustrators and storytellers who can bring ideas to life with fluidity and color. The creative process was totally collaborative, open mined and both SFrog and LRR were aiming to create something that was never done before.”

Though still ongoing, A Girl Story has already received a great deal of positive attention, including winning Site of the Day honors on The Favourite Website Awards (FWA). Praise for the project has also centered around its distinctive style and approach. “People talk a lot about this innovation and the idea,” Goodson says. “They also talk about the innocence in execution, and they love the feel and look of the work.” Now 100% unlocked, the effort has raised over $5,000 dollars to help the girls of Nanhi Kali.

Josh Greenspan, Creative Director at STRAWBERRY FROG” Working with Little Red Robot was a truly collaborative and rewarding process. We came up with creative solutions together, shared ideas openly and pushed forward as one to create an extraordinary piece of communication.”

Corinna Falusi, Creative Director at STRAWBERRYFROG, says that the project’s success is due in part to “the unique illustrations style and animation technique as it sets the tone for the whole campaign. LRR and their partners created the graphic hand made 2D Style illustrations—a layered look that gives a sophisticated, yet playful feel, while reflecting India’s culture.”

Margaux Ravis, Executive Producer at StrawberryFrog, concurs.”While the company has a diversity of styles available, what I really liked was that they tapped into the heart of Tarla with their illustrations and in doing so, gave her story even more heart. The number one comment I hear about the work itself is that people love its purity and simplicity, but also find it poetic and eloquent,” she notes. “The donation-based platform reminds people that it doesn’t take much to help girls like Tarla – and that every bit helps.”

“I would say this is a truly innovate interactive film experience.” Shukovsky says. “It’s simple, but stunningly effective. It still gives me chills when I see the story animate from Youtube player to Youtube player.”

About A Girl Story:

A Girl Story is a unique donation-based film series that brings to life the experience of many underprivileged girls in India. This particular story is told through the eyes of Tarla, a young girl who simply wants to go to school and receive an education. Whether she succeeds, however, is completely up to you. Tarla’s story will progress only by audience donations unlocking new chapters within the YouTube film series, just as each girl at Project Nanhi Kali depends on donors to progress, stay in school, and complete her education. Please see nanhikali.org for more information.

This week, Pittsburgh Steeler and Super Bowl contender Hines Ward made headlines when he called out the NFL on how it handles player safety. ”The league doesn’t care about us anyway,” Ward said. “They don’t care about the safety of the game.” This sentiment, part of a growing concern as Super Bowl season comes to a pitch, is echoed in a new PSA for the blogger Dave Pear and the group Independent Football Veterans. The group’s new PSA, “Shame On the NFL,” juxtaposes the fanfare and hype surrounding the NFL and the Super Bowl with a striking and disturbing collage of former players and the health problems they face today.

Santa Monica, CA, October 12, 2010 – The 2010 Jay Chiat Awards for Strategic Excellence were announced at the opening reception for the inaugural Jay Chiat Festival, in Miami, with the Gold Award for Brand Experience going to “Nothing Can End Hunger” – a pro-bono campaign for Rhode Island Food Bank produced by Santa Monica-based Beef Films and created by NAIL, the Providence-based communications agency – challenges people to think about the stark emptiness of no food on the table and to break with inaction – “an unnecessary tradition”.

Click here to view the embedded video.

How do you compel people to act in the fight against hunger? How do you drive home the very idea of hunger in such a way that people can’t just brush it aside? You ask them to look down at an empty plate. NAIL came up with the concept and the project was initially slated for the summer of 2009. It was postponed due to a lack of funding. Beef Films Executive Producers Ashley Adams and Stephen Hens, along with Founding Director Nick Spooner and Producer John Malina, worked with NAIL to rework the creative and formulate a plan to execute the project on a more limited budget. “This was such a powerful concept, and we really pushed for a way to keep it alive and get it done,” said Adams. Working with a scaled back budget of under $100K, Spooner helmed the campaign, which shot for three days at the Rhode Island Mall in Warwick, RI. Post was done at NAIL, with equipment provided by Chop House Edit; the company four-walled at NAIL’s offices in Providence for close to a month. The campaign was cut by Chop House’s in-house editor Jaime Arze.

The challenge was to induce younger donors, ages 20 to 40, to give to Rhode Island’s esteemed charitable organization. NAIL recognized they were up against a wall of perception and had to convince potential donors that “something” could be done about a seemingly endless social problem. “We found out that younger people would prefer to give to charities where there’s a defined use for their donation,” said Jeremy Crisp, Managing Partner at NAIL. “They give to buy equipment for a hospital or a wing for a school. These types of fund-raising objectives are finite and tangible.” The more the team at NAIL worked around problem of hunger, the more they hit upon the phrase “nothing will end hunger” until “nothing” turned inside-out and became the central concept. “How do you make ‘nothing’ a positive thing? You make it something meaningful. An empty can that you hold in your hand,” according to Crisp. “All of a sudden, nothing can end hunger in Rhode Island. People can confront the bleakness of on-going hunger with the very tangible act of buying a can of Nothing.”

Click here to view the embedded video.

Empty cans of “Nothing” are being sold for $2.99 each at many Dunkin Donuts, Whole Foods, Dave’s Marketplace, and other supermarket locations, with proceeds going to the Rhode Island Food Bank. The campaign tagline: “Nothing Can End Hunger In Rhode Island Island” appears online at www.nothing.org, the Web site for online donations that supports the campaign; on four billboards rising up around the smallest state; in online tags; and in the TV spots. The RI Food Bank services about 55,000 people a month, with that number steadily increasing.

In addition to the 4A’s Jay Chiat Award, the campaign’s “Taste Test” spot is now up for a Hatch Peoples Choice Award (you can still Vote Here), with voting closing at 5 p.m. today, Oct. 12, and the winner will be announced during the awards show. at the 2010 Hatch Awards on Oct. 14.

About the Jay Chiat Awards for Strategic Excellence
Previously called the 4A’s Awards for Account Planning, the awards were renamed in 2004 in honor of advertising legend Jay Chiat, who is credited with introducing the discipline of planning to the United States. The Grand Prix, Gold, Silver and Bronze winners receive an award in the shape of a building block, symbolizing the discipline of planning as it relates to the advertising process.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Location-Based Service Enables Parents to Monitor Their Child’s Location to Help Ensure their Safety and Security

ATLANTA, September 22, 2010 – A child is reported missing every 40 seconds and more than 260,000 children are abducted each year. In order to help ensure the safety and security of all children, the AmberWatch Foundation and Omnilink Systems have joined together to launch AmberWatch GPS, the most powerful mobile solution available to parents that need or want to know their child’s location any time of any day.
Based on Omnilink’s award-winning FocalPoint™ platform and an array of different tracking devices, AmberWatch GPS uses cellular networks and GPS to track the location of children of all ages. From the AmberWatch GPS site –www.AmberWatchGPS.com – parents can view their child’s location on a map, set up schedules when they want their child to be located automatically, create “safety zones”, and set up a range of different text and email notifications.

AmberWatch GPS is available to all parents and can be used with both a dedicated tracking device and/or a cell phone their child already carries. Whether a family has one or many children, a single AmberWatch GPS account can be used to monitor as many children as necessary.

“Omnilink is honored to play a key role in enabling the tracking technology behind AmberWatch GPS,” says Kelly Gay, CEO of Omnilink. “Our comprehensive LBS platform will help give parents peace of mind and a suite of highly effective tools for ensuring their children’s safety.”

“The AmberWatch Foundation is thrilled to be working with Omnilink to bring their best-of-breed location technologies into the fight to protect our nation’s children against child predators,” says AmberWatch Foundation CEO Keith Jarrett.

AmberWatch GPS is part of a family of new child safety and security products that the AmberWatch Foundation has partnered with different technology leaders to create. These solutions are all offered to help keep kids safe from the dangers of the digital world. Portions of the proceeds of AmberWatch GPS help fund the new AmberWatch Alert system (www.AmberWatchAlert.org) that the AmberWatch Foundation launched in June 2010.

“To connect communities with the goal of protecting our children, we created a system that spreads the word about predators before they can harm our children,” says Jarrett. “Parents subscribing to AmberWatch Alert receive FREE email alerts if a child predator is, or has recently been, preying on children in any of their selected zip codes of interest. Information on predators is received through multiple sources, then vetted and authenticated by the AmberWatch Foundation before an official AmberWatch Alert email is issued.”

AmberWatch alerts are graded based on the level of concern, combining community proactivity and awareness with authentication and appropriate law enforcement involvement.

“Parents, schools, and police are always on the lookout for possible predators, but until now there was no organized way to unify this effort or share this information beyond a single school,” says Jarrett. “When an ‘Amber Alert’ goes out, the abduction has already taken place. Now, with the AmberWatch Alert system, parents are united and armed with information to prevent abduction.”

Two months ago, with the goal of putting parents in charge of protecting their children from known predators with real time alerts, the non-profit AmberWatch Foundation released a startling viral video – Weapon of Choice – featuring moms with guns. The video generated over 596,000 views on YouTube and other outlets. More than 225,000 parents have signed up at www.AmberWatchAlert.org for news of child predators in their selected zip codes.

In this video, Jarrett answers frequently asked questions about the service, issues of child abduction and child safety, and the organization’s explosive PSA.

Thus far, 150 alerts per month have been issued nationwide. AmberWatch founder and CEO Keith Jarrett sees the potential for a virtual neighborhood watch that might mean law enforcement would never again need to issue an Amber Alert for a missing child. Since launching AmberWatch Alert, he has received numerous letters from grateful parents.

The alerts are issued as follows: Parents receive email Amber Watch Alerts if a child predator is or has recently been preying on children in any of their selected zip codes of interest. Information on predators is received through multiple sources, then vetted and authenticated by the AmberWatch Foundation before an official AmberWatch Alert email is issued.

The service was conceived as a parent’s “Weapon of Choice” in the area of child protection, and it is Jarrett’s hope that eventually every family in the US will be subscribed.

June 28, 2010 - “Moms with Guns – AmberWatch Alert PSA” is the most watched Public Service Announcement on YouTube, and is the second “Most Discussed” video overall at Break. Since its debut, between the two video sharing sites, “Moms with Guns” has been viewed over 170,000 times and is accelerating fast.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The video, launched on June 22, directs viewers to www.AmberWatchAlert.org, which is a FREE email-based Child-Predator Alert service that alerts parent-subscribers of potentially harmful child predator activity occurring in their area sourced from local law enforcement agencies, schools, as well as other concerned parents and citizens, and where all such alerts are vetted and authenticated by the AmberWatch Foundation before they are sent out.

While the well-known Amber Alert is a successful national system that alerts the public after a child has been abducted, the new AmberWatch Alert service is a powerful, proactive weapon that parents can use to prevent abductions and abuse before any such tragedy happens in the first place.

AmberWatch Foundation’s CEO, Keith Jarrett, speculates that the enormous viewer interest in the “Moms with Guns” video is likely due to the strong reactions it has stirred online for its graphic depiction of moms literally taking up arms in the war against child predators. They are shown wielding all manner of automatic weapons, a powerful visual that is sparking conversation and controversy from all angles.

“Moms are fierce when it comes to protecting their children,” said Jarrett, who begins a media tour late this month to promote and explain the new service. “Mom’s Weapon of Choice” campaign was intended to be “an aggressive push to remind us all that the power to change things – the power to take control of our world – is ours only if we unite and stand together,” explained Jarrett. “The subject of child abduction and abuse is one society can no longer afford to be passive and shy about, and we want people to see mothers as warriors, strong and steadfast, united under a common goal, and prepared for battle. By banding together under this empowering new alert system and the community-sourced knowledge base that powers it, we then become forces to be reckoned with.”

Jarrett said he is hoping to register 10 million+ subscribers. “Keeping our children safe is a universal priority,” he said, “and it requires decisive action. We’re urging all parents to take it.”

Part of a campaign that will extend to print, radio, and television, the PSA features moms, since they are usually the children’s primary caregivers. The AmberWatch Alert service, however, unites families – moms, dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, their neighbors and communities – and gives them a hands-on, very accessible means to keep their children safe.

LOS ANGELES, CA, June 7, 2010 – On June 21, 2010, AmberWatch Foundation – the definitive name in preventing crimes against children – will launch www.AmberWatchAlert.org, a free service with simple online registration that arms parents with authenticated information and provides them with a powerful, proactive weapon for preemption and prevention against abduction. The AmberWatchAlert System will be launched with an extensive cross-media marketing campaign spanning web, radio, print, and television.

“To connect communities in aggressive child protection, we created a system that spreads the word about predators before they can harm our children,” said AmberWatch Foundation CEO Keith Jarrett, who begins a national media tour in late June to promote AmberWatch Alert. “Subscriber-Parents receive email Alerts if a child predator is or has recently been preying on children in any of their selected zip codes of interest. Information on predators is received through multiple sources, then vetted and authenticated by the AmberWatch Foundation before an official AmberWatch Alert email is issued.” Jarrett added that alerts are graded based on the level of concern, combining community proactivity and awareness with authentication and appropriate law enforcement involvement.

One need only refer to a handful of statistics to sense the immediate need for a service like AmberWatch Alert:

• 2,200 children are reported missing every day – US Dept of Justice

• Over 260,000 children are abducted each year – US Dept of Justice

• One in four girls and one in six boys are victims of sexual assault by the age of 18 – Kaiser Permanente

While the cross-media marketing campaign is geared toward the aggregation of a 10MM+ parent database of subscribers (with kids between the ages of 4 through 17), the Foundation views law enforcement agencies and schools – which previously had no unified method of sharing information – as key partners in this endeavor. “Parents, schools, and police are always on the lookout for possible predators, but until now there was no organized way to unify this effort or share this information beyond a single school.” said Jarrett. “When an ‘Amber Alert’ goes out, the abduction has already taken place. Now, parents are united and armed with a ‘weapon of choice’ to prevent abduction.”

AmberWatch Foundation was established in 2004, with the mission to provide educational programs and innovative technologies that proactively and preemptively protect children against abduction, predators and the dangers of the digital world. Initiatives such as the “Be Safe!” Education Program have garnered the support of Foundation Champions from our nation’s law enforcement, professional sports, media, and entertainment arenas, and earned AmberWatch Foundation distinction as a GuideStar verified nonprofit organization.

The AmberWatch Foundation is a 501c3 national not for profit organization, headquartered in Seal Beach, California.

PSA Breaks Nationally Today, Co-Produced by Beef Films and Keely Shaye Brosnan, with Post Production by Chop House Edit

SANTA MONICA, CA, June 6, 2010 – “Is it possible that the Obama Administration will capitulate to a proposed plan that permits Japan, Norway, and Iceland to resume commercial whaling? As unlikely as it sounds, the answer is yes.” On Earth Day, actor and lifelong environmentalist Pierce Brosnan joined IFAW President Fred O’Regan in penning an op-ed piece that challenged the Obama Administration to withdraw its support for a dangerous new proposal to overturn the global ban on whaling. Now, Brosnan addresses this question in “Mr. President,” a co-production between Beef Films and environmental advocate Keely Shaye Brosnan in a ground-breaking PSA. Raging Artists has created an online magazine for Save The Whales Now, showcasing the video and additional information.

In the spot, Brosnan calls on the Commander-in-Chief to stay true to his 2008 pledge to “ensure the U.S. provides leadership in enforcing wildlife protection agreements, including strengthening the international ban on commercial whaling.”

Click here to view the embedded video.

Directed by Pascal Franchot, the PSA breaks this morning on TV and the Web and implores viewers to visit SaveTheWhalesNow.org – where they can sign an online petition – and to call the White House. The campaign is spearheaded by award winning journalist, author, and television correspondent/producer Keely Shaye Brosnan, who developed the concept and assembled a coalition comprised of The Humane Society of the United States, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), and IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). “Whales are not just a commodity,” she said. “They are an integral part of our eco system.”

Pierce Brosnan is the global whale spokesperson for IFAW, and Franchot has been involved with the group for the past eight years. He directed the Leonardo DiCaprio and Charlize Theron PSA’s for the organization; Theron appeared in a spot focused on an oil spill in South Africa affecting penguins, while DiCaprio promoted elephant conservation at the Meru National Park in Kenya. Franchot was attending IFAW’s elephant ivory trade band conference last month when he was approached about the SaveTheWhalesNow campaign.

The project, which was produced pro bono, boasts a score by GRAMMY winner Peter Kater. It was shot on RED, and posted at Beef Films‘ partner company Chop House Edit. “Part of our mission was to deliver a beautiful, provocative piece that will turn heads and influence people and ultimately our environment’s health and vitality,” said Partner/Artist Stephen Hens. “On the technical side, our RED workflow allowed for a flexible and custom finishing path, which was especially important given the urgency of the project (the whaling proposal will be voted on this month).”

“As a young company, we’ve been eager to embrace unique opportunities,” said Partner/Executive Producer Ashley Adams. In addition to “Mr. President,” Adams recently executive produced the innovative “Nothing” campaign for Food Bank, along with several digital and traditional projects. “In this case, there was a bold, important message backed by Keely and Pierce’s tenacious spirit.”

That “tenacious spirit” has resulted in a powerful call to action that is certain to raise the ire of the Obama Administration.

“There is no moral, scientific, or economic justification for slaughtering whales,” said Brosnan, who is not dissuaded by the PSA’s potential for controversy. He and Keely have long contributed their time and talent to support numerous environmental causes such as marine mammal and wetland protection, and anti-nuclear, clean air and clean water campaigns. They engaged in a long term campaign with the NRDC to challenge the United States Navy’s deployment of a new sonar system in over 75% of the world’s oceans, citing scientific evidence that low-mid and high frequency sonar poses a grave threat to whales, dolphins, seals, and other marine mammals. For over a decade, they have lobbied against legislation designed to weaken federal standards for labeling canned tuna “Dolphin Safe.” In 1997, Green Cross International President Mikhail Gorbachev presented Pierce with an Environmental Leadership Award, citing him as “a truly committed leader whose bold actions and clever voice have been instrumental in marine mammal protection, as well as that of fragile ecosystems.” They worked with the NRDC and IFAW to stop a proposed salt factory from being built at Laguna San Ignacio on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Their unprecedented victory prevented the destruction of the least disturbed breeding ground for the Pacific gray whale. And most recently they led the coalition to stop a proposed LNG terminal from being built off the coast of Oxnard and Malibu in a designated marine sanctuary.

Pierce and Keely Brosnan have emerged as respected and passionate activists addressing any number of issues in an effort to protect the planet and the species that inhabit it. The Jane Goodall Institute, Environmental Media Association and Women In Film have honored them with humanitarian awards, while Heal the Bay, Oceana, NRDC, Earth Communications Office, In Defense of Animals and others have honored them for their ongoing commitment to environmental issues.
