What’s Making You Fat and I’m Fat Again

AlphaDogs’ contribution on these two Best Life^TM specials spanned Graphics, Online, and Audio.

"What’s Making You Fat" counters the widespread misinformation currently confusing the
public about effective fitness and weight loss. In this Discovery Studios production, Bob Greene looks back at his career and counts down his personal Top 10 Diet and Exercise Myths, busting each one.

"I’m Fat Again" focused on yo-yo dieting, following the progress of several men and women who were trying to lose weight. As such, the main title design had to touch on both the personal stories of these people as well as the general concept of people who seesaw from weight loss to weight gain.

"I settled on a design incorporating a moving video wall of dozens of panels mixing clips from the show with stock images relating to healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. The trick was to find a balance that didn’t emphasize any one person from the show, and that stayed general enough for the audience to identify with and specific enough to tie into the participants’ personal stories. All of this and an animated logo within 6 seconds! Luckily I’ve known Discovery post-production supervisor Kristin Means a long time, which really helped streamline the design process for me."

Graphics for "What’s Making You Fat: A Best Life Special," included a main title, a pop-up for dieting facts, a myth countdown, and multiple-choice quizzes that revealed surprising truths about common dieting myths. All were created by Senior Designer Russell Frazier of AlphaDogs. 

"The show deals with a very serious topic for many people. The use of graphics helped keep it lively and educational, without detracting from the dramatic personal stories of the cast."

The specials were produced by Discovery Studios for Discovery Health. Wendy Douglas was the executive producer of both specials for Discovery Health, and Maggie Friedman was the producer for Discovery Studios. For AlphaDogs, Terence Curren did the Online, Marcus Pardo contributed the Audio post, while Graphics were created by Sean Williams and Russell Frazier.
