CHICAGO, IL, May 24, 2007 – Pete Schmidt of Comma Music and Sound Design has no plans to perform at a concert venue near you…but it's not for lack of fans. As the composer of "Photosynthesized," an upbeat rock song for the BBDO/Detroit’s Dodge Caliber spot "Road Trip," Schmidt has received a flurry of emails and his work has been the subject of conversations across the blogosphere.
"Naturally, we're thrilled that the song is a hit, so to speak," Schmidt said, "but the really interesting thing to me is that the lines between music written by a composer at a music house and music written by someone signed to a label (indie or major) are blurring."
The spot features four young friends who pile into a Caliber and hit the road. "Road Trip" not only chronicles their adventures, it showcases the nifty features of the Caliber. The track is fun, breezy, and – perhaps most appealing to viewers – has the feel of a song you'd hear on the radio. "I'd been performing the basis of this tune for a while, as another song with original lyrics," Schmidt recalled. "The thing that agency creatives are realizing is that many music company composers are also in bands and writing songs and DJ-ing and performing. The thing that takes us over the top is that we understand how to work with film."
Unlike other performers, composers like Schmidt can subtly score a scene or adjust the tempo or change the instrumentation to give the client just what they want. "We did quite a bit of that with the Dodge piece," Schmidt explained. "The keyboard part was turned up to fill in the space left from removing the vocals. The hand claps were brought down a bit to stay out of the way of the fx, and so forth."
As summer approaches, "Road Trip," which aired this winter as a "warm weather" spot, serves to warm the hearts of fans and clients alike. "When something like this clicks, it's the best of both worlds," Schmidt concluded. "a quirky indie band-sounding track that is both original and customizable."
