THE ROSE BOWL, January 12, 2007 – The 1st Annual Downhill Derby Race was held this past weekend to benefit The Boys & Girls Club. 16 Derby cars entered by ad biz sponsors such as Cutters, Inc., the GARTNER/tight/Outsider/The Viral Factory collective, Jigsaw, @radical media, and Machine Head participated in the event, which raised an estimated $50,000 for the Club.
Director Jeff Zwart's "Royal Speed Bomb" came in first,
followed closely by the GARTNER/tight/Outsider/The Viral Factory's Sully Carter (pict. top r.) 10 years old, and a derby car racing novice, and the son of GARTNER partner/EP Rich Carter. The graffiti-style car was painted by art director, Michael Gaw. "We have to give credit to pit crew chief Theodore Melfi, a.k.a. Teddy Pitts," said Rich Carter. "But in all seriousness, the 'champion' of the day was (Detour's) Josh Canova."
Editor Nadia Hennrich (pict. middle r.), who drove for Cutters, placed third. "It was neck and neck, but the Gartner kid took it at the last second," she laughed. "Really, this was my first time racing a soap box car and it was great fun!"
"This was a brilliant event for a great cause, and Josh Canova did a great job or organizing it," said Cutters Executive Producer Nicole Visram.
